The teeth are accessory digestive system organs that are involved in the initial processing of food in the oral cavity. The teeth have several digestive functions:

Slicing, tearing, grinding of food during mastication (chewing)

Occlusion occurs between the upper and lower teeth to allow chewing functions
Mastication is initiated when food puts pressure on oral tissues
Different tooth types specialize in slicing, tearing and chewing

Stimulation of taste buds
Mixing food with saliva

The teeth are covered in a hard enamel that protects the underlying connective tissue and nervous structures. Once the enamel has been formed in the adult teeth it cannot be replaced.
