The
teeth are accessory
digestive system organs that are involved in the initial processing of food in the
oral cavity. The
teeth have several digestive
functions:
- Slicing, tearing, grinding of food during mastication (chewing)
- Stimulation of taste buds
- Mixing food with saliva
The
teeth are covered in a hard enamel that protects the underlying
connective tissue and
nervous structures. Once the
enamel has been formed in the adult
teeth it cannot be replaced.
