Lesson Objectives
Students research Canada’s role (past and present) in peacekeeping missions of the United Nations. Students produce a world map, and answer questions about the map and Canada’s involvement with peacekeeping missions.
Motivation
Students will view pictures of a Shanty Town in the outskirts of Khartoum, Sudan (Some refugees of Darfur live there). Students will pose the question: “What responsibilities does the world have to these people?”
Requirements
- Computer lab and internet access
- Web Site: www.un.org
- UN Organizational Chart (Appendix B)
- World base map (Appendix C)
- World Map assignment sheet (Appendix D)
- World atlas
Instructional Plan
- Students will use the topic “The United Nations” to engage in a rapid writing activity (Appendix A). Students share ideas in a teacher-led class discussion.
- Students will then read the UN Organizational Chart which outlines the organs, bodies, programmes etc. of the United Nations (Appendix B). Teacher will question students on the names of the six organs of the UN. Through additional questioning, the teacher will also ensure that students recognize the different sections of the UN (bodies, programmes and funds, commissions, agencies etc). Suggested questions include:
- Under what organ do you find: UNICEF, Human Rights, Secretary General Kofi Annan, Narcotic Drugs, International Atomic Energy Agency, World Trade Organization, World Meteorological Organization, Commission on the Status of Women, World Food Program.
- What program catches your interest? Why?
- What part of the UN would you like to learn more about?

Students will use a highlighter to link “Peacekeeping Operations and Missions” to the appropriate organ.
- Students will begin researching past and current peacekeeping missions of the UN by using the UN website. They will also identify which missions currently involve Canadians. This information will be presented on a world map (Appendix C), analyzed and submitted for evaluation (Appendix D). Students will review the assignment sheet and evaluation criteria before beginning their research.
