Lesson Objectives

This activity can be used as an introduction to mapping skills at the beginning of the course.  It can be used as an introduction to an Africa based unit, course, or for a class following the Small World Big Picture Africa travels.

Requirements

  • Power Point Software
  • Projector, Laptop
  • Internet
  • The Small World Big Picture – Expedition Africa website
  • Appendices with the following work sheets:
    • Appendix A: Guidelines for Creating a Professional Map
    • Appendix B: Mapping Africa and UNESCO sites
    • Appendix C: Record of Research
    • Appendix D: Mapping Africa and UNESCO sites
    • Appendix E: Guidelines For Creating A Professional Map - Mapping Rubric
    • Appendix F: Checklist for a Professional Map
    • Appendix G: List of Hot Links to UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Africa
    • Appendix H: Map of Africa

Instructional Plan

  • Either hand out the “Guidelines for creating a professional map”, or have it copied as an overhead note.
  • Hand out and read through the instructions.
  • The “Record of Research” handout may be completed in the computer lab, or, using the HOT LINKS to the UNESCO website, completed as a class activity.
  • Depending on the class and the teacher, you may wish to teach a brief lesson on “Symbols”.
  • Hand out and explain the “Mapping Africa and UNESCO sites” page.  Read through with the class, explaining that there are countries, capital cities and bodies of water to label, as well as the symbols from the previous page.
  • Column two contains countries and their capital cities that also contain UNESCO World Heritage Sites.  These are to be labelled on the map.
  • All labelling should be done in PENCIL and peers assess using either the Rubric or Checklist.
  • Before colour is added, the teacher may wish to set some guidelines: all countries with UNESCO sites one colour, the rest of Africa one colour, multi-colour for UNESCO sites, etc.

Notes to Teachers:

  • Using a LCD projector with internet connection saves much time by completing the UNESCO sites as a class.
  • Teachers should modify “Mapping Guidelines” to conform to department policy.
  • Photocopying the Blank Africa map onto 11” x 17” paper is recommended for this exercise.
