Lesson Objective

Students will examine:

  • Examine a variety of Monasteries in Egypt and Ethiopia.

 

Requirements

  • Classroom with internet access for research work
  • Websites with information concerning monasteries in Egypt and Ethiopia – please consult Online Resources Section.

Instructional Plan

Students will conduct research and answer the following questions:

  • What is monasticism?
  • Who is a monk? Who is a hermit?
  • How did monasteries begin?
  • What is the life of a monk like?

Students will then:

  • Choose a monastery in Egypt and/or Ethiopia
  • Indicate when it was founded, who the founder was, when was it founded, provide a photo of it, what was its basic purpose, does it exist today and provide any other relevant information.
  • Present their research to the class

Instructors:

  • Organize for a monk from a local monastery or nun from a local convent come in and speak to the students about monasticism, prayer, saints, etc.

After researching who is a monk for a day, live out the lifestyle of a monk. The entire school can even participate in this.
