Esther Mensah is one charismatic African lady, full of energy! Originally from Ghana, Esther has been living in Ottawa with her family since she was eleven years old. She is a proud alumna of Algonquin College’s Hotel and Restaurant Management Program. Since early 2006, Esther has been working at the College’s Residences as a Guest Host. She is happy to be part of the Algonquin College family. “It’s a fun place to be!” she says.
Esther enjoys living in Ottawa for many reasons. “What I love most about Ottawa is that there are a lot of different cultures,” she says. When she moved to Ottawa, she was not sure she would find many Ghanaians but soon after she learnt that Ottawa is home to many people of Ghanaian origin. The Ghanaian community stays connected through the different kinds of activities that take place in different times of the year. For instance, every year, the Ghanaians in Ottawa celebrate their independence day on the 6th of March. And of course, Esther proudly participates in such activities! Esther highly recommends students at Algonquin to take part in different activities hosted by the college, such as Black History Month, Celebration of Cultures and the Chinese New Year celebrations. This will allow people of different cultures to always stay connected.
So, what does Esther miss the most about Ghana? “One thing that I miss most about home is lots of games,” she says happily, “if I go back home, I will be very excited to play the games I used to play when I was little.”
